Yay your baby is almost here! Are you prepared? Are you worried you haven’t bought all the new baby essentials?? There are SO many products to choose from, and new ones are constantly being introduced. I couldn’t believe how many new products came out in just the four years between my first child and the twins. Many of them I wish had been available when my oldest was born.
Now I’m going to let you in on a little secret – you don’t NEED every single baby item that you find at the store. In fact, most of the stuff you probably don’t need. When I was pregnant with my oldest, I put everything in the baby department on baby registry, but I didn’t end up using most of it and found that it just cluttered my house. With the twins I just made sure I had the essentials.
So what are some of the essentials? Well I’d like to share with you some products I used, loved, and highly recommend.
New Baby Essentials
This are a must!! The Rock N Play Sleeper was my favorite baby product. All of my kids suffered from reflux, so these were a lifesaver. These weren’t available when my first child was born, so I would put towels under his mattress to elevate him, but he would just roll down it during his sleep. These Rock N Plays were a game changer when I had the twins. They are designed with an incline and keep the baby secure, but they can’t slide down because they have a buckle to strap them in. I didn’t have to worry about their reflux and aspirating in the middle of the night while I was asleep, and they were much more comfortable because the acid was staying in their stomach so they slept well. Another thing that is great about this is it makes them feel very secure. It has comfortable sides that closely surround them, so they feel almost as if someone is holding them, and for newborn especially, this helps limit the startle reflex that may wake them up. In addition, the Rock N Play is amazingly portable! It is very lightweight and folds up easily, so I could easily move it from room to room or bring it with us if we were going somewhere over night.
Diapers and wipes are definitely new baby essentials. I have tried MANY different diaper and wipes brands, but these are my favorite. Luvs diapers are wonderful because they don’t leak and they are reasonably priced. I love Pampers diapers as well, but their pricepoint is higher than Luvs, so I stuck with Luvs and have been extremely satisfied. My favorite wipes are the Pampers Sensitive wipes. There are many other versions of wipes, but these were the only wipes I could find that didn’t give my babies red, raw, painful butts. They are super gentle on that delicate baby skin! Yes they are a little bit more expensive than other brands, but it was worth it to me to not have a baby in pain.
Make sure you have a thermometer and Infant Tylenol before you bring your new baby home. Babies can get sick, and because their immune systems are immature, it can be worse if they get a fever than for an older child. It is important to be able to check your babys temperature if they start feeling a little warm to you or get sick. If your baby is under 3 months and has a fever of 100.4 or greater, call your doctor right away. They may want you to bring them in or just give them Tylenol, which is also what you need to have on hand. Tylenol has been recommended by hospitals and pediatricians for the last 20 years. If your child is under 2 years, make sure you buy the Infant Tylenol and not the Childrens Tylenol because the dosing is different. Another good reason to have Tylenol at home is for when you baby starts cutting teeth. Those little teeth poking through can be very painful for them, so Tylenol can help with the pain.
Every baby needs to eat (obviously), and even if you decide to breastfeed, you most likely will need a bottle at some point. I tried every bottle they had on the market with my first child because he had severe reflux and gas/tummy troubles. Dr. Browns bottles were the only ones that worked to limit these problems. They were wonderful!! With the twins, I tried a couple new bottles that had come to market just because they were ‘new technology’ and had less parts (I’ll get to that in a minute) than the Dr. Browns, but they didn’t work for their reflux or gassy issues, so I went back to Dr. Browns, and they worked like a charm again! Happy babies=happy mommy! These were especially great for us having boy/girl twins because they come in boy colors and girl colors, so we didn’t have to try to figure out whos bottle belonged to which twin. Now, I’ll be honest, there are a lot of parts to wash when cleaning these bottles, but washing the extra parts was totally worth it if they helped my baby be less fussy. We had to hand wash them all with my first child because we didn’t have a dishwasher, but with the twins the parts didn’t really bother me because we did have a dishwasher. I would just throw all the parts in a dishwasher basket like this one.
Every baby will get a diaper rash sometime. Even if you use the best diapers, the best wipes, and change them every 15 minutes (yeah right), they will get a rash at some point. It may be from something they ate, yeast, a new allergy that appears, from pooping a lot (especially breastfed newborns), or a host of other reasons. You will definitely want a good cream to heal their bottom and stop the pain. I had tried every diaper cream I could find before a friend told me about Triple Paste. It was a lifesaver! The rash would start to heal after the first application. It is also a good product to prevent diaper rash if your child is prone to diaper rashes. This product used to only be available by prescription, but thankfully you can now buy it over the counter. It is a thick cream that doesn’t easily wipe off, and is fragrance free and hypoallergenic. I LOVE this stuff!
Now these are certainly not all the items you will need for your new baby, but they should definitely be at the top of your list!
